Protect teeth, gums, and the environment of your mouth
A healthy mouth supports chewing, speaking, swallowing, and comfortable daily life. Teeth, gums, saliva, and oral microbes all contribute to this environment.
Bleeding or swollen gums, recurring cavities, sensitivity, persistent bad breath, a dry or sticky mouth, or discomfort when eating.
Mouth breathing may contribute to dryness. Saliva helps protect teeth and oral tissues, so reduced saliva can raise the risk of decay and discomfort. Dry mouth can also result from medications or medical conditions. Gum disease and diabetes have important clinical connections that may call for coordinated care.
Your dentist assesses teeth, gums, hygiene, saliva-related symptoms, and medications. Persistent dryness may require medical evaluation. Nasal or sleep symptoms can help identify whether breathing habits are part of the picture.
Care may include professional cleaning, periodontal treatment, treatment of decay, and individualized prevention. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth. Hydration, sugar-free gum when appropriate, and saliva substitutes may help dryness. Review medications with your prescriber rather than stopping them yourself. A whole-food diet, limiting frequent sugar and acidic drinks, adequate hydration, avoiding tobacco, and regular sleep support oral and overall health.
Tell your dentist about morning dryness, breathing habits, and changes in health. Addressing a breathing concern complements dental care and does not replace it.
